The aim of the CD Laboratory is to quantify the effects of an ageing society in the field of health, labour market and personnel economics and to create a basis for an evidence-based debate in society and politics.
Many countries, particularly in Western Europe, are experiencing a significant shift in the age structure of their population due to steadily increasing life expectancy and low birth rates. The ageing of the population represents an enormous challenge for politics, the welfare state, the healthcare and pension system, as well as the labour market and personnel policy in companies. However, evidence-based discussion has been limited in recent decades due to the inadequate evidence base and insufficient networking of research activities.
Research in the CD Laboratory will combine two topics: Ageing and the labour market and the health economic aspects of ageing.
The aim is to investigate the dynamics of ageing in the economy and labour market that arise both within companies and as a result of labour market policy measures. One example is research into the effects of monetary incentives for early retirement on the one hand and wage subsidies on the employment of older employees on the other.
Health economic studies primarily concern healthcare research, in particular the question of whether our healthcare system can cope with the increase in the incidence of age-related diseases and how appropriate care can be guaranteed, e.g. by increasing efficiency potential in healthcare, promoting a healthy lifestyle and expanding preventive medical check-ups.
The analyses are based on extensive Austrian individual data on the healthcare and labour market system, which can be linked anonymously. The accessible data set includes data from 35 years, which makes the effects of previous legal regulations and their adaptations visible and researchable.
The CD Laboratory is intended to be the basis for independent, evidence-based advice and policy and to improve the level of public health and social policy debate and also develop strategies for employment and health policy in an ageing society.
